Biden invites Abinader to the Virtual Summit for Democracy
The President of the United States, Joseph Robinette -Joe- Biden, invited his counterpart Luis Abinader to the Virtual Summit for Democracy, which will take place on December 9 and 10 of this year.
The reason for the meeting is to discuss measures that “strengthen democracy and protect it from authoritarianism,” said the Presidency in a press release.
The communication, translated into Spanish, dated November 9, 2021, was sent by the United States Embassy through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic, on November 16.
“On behalf of the American people, I send my best wishes to you, and to the people of the Dominican Republic. We recognize and appreciate your collaboration in building democratic societies that respect human rights that allow all citizens to prosper, ”Biden told Abinader.
He adds in the letter that in a time of great challenges and enormous opportunities, it is more important than ever for democracies to demonstrate that they can meet the needs of their peoples.
“For this reason, I have the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the Virtual Summit for Democracy on December 9 and 10, 2021,” states the US president in his letter.
It also indicates that it is inviting presidents and heads of government to the meeting, as well as other government leaders and the voices of the business and non-governmental communities to join its initiative in adopting measures to strengthen democracy and defend yourself from authoritarianism.
They also seek to combat corruption and promote respect for human rights.
“We look forward to sharing more details shortly and hearing your ideas on how we can foster a more democratic, equitable, inclusive and sustainable world.
Biden says that as a country constantly striving to create a more just and equitable society, the United States will host the Summit for Democracy with humility and in a spirit of mutual learning.
Together, we will embark on the work necessary to shape a prosperous and peaceful future built on respect for the rights and aspirations of all people. I look forward to welcoming you and joining you in this effort, ”concluded Biden.
