Escogido defeats the Licey and grabs to a miracle

On the afternoon of Wilkin Castillo’s retirement, the Escogido kept his mathematical chances of qualifying alive. Brent Honeywell pitched five solid innings and Jonathan Guzmán had two hits and two RBIs in the Leones’ 5-1 win over Licey.

The red team (15-30) thus achieved its second win in a row and prevented the Tigers (29-15) from achieving their first 30-win campaign on Sunday since the 2006-2007 year.

Otto López and Pedro Severino also hit a couple of hits for some scarlets that fired 10 hits through no man’s ground and capitalized on three errors from the blue defense. Honeywell (2-0) won and the Chosen One was finally able to defeat Steve Moyers (4-2), in their fourth meeting

The reds stung ahead in the second. Jonathan Guzmán shot Peter O’Brien’s RBI double, who had hit a single. Otto López fired a hit for the second that moved Guzmán, who took advantage of a shooting error to score the second.

The blues discounted in the third. Sergio Alcántara popped out to the left, dropped, advanced to second with a hit for third by Emilio Bonifacio and took advantage of another blunder on the play to score.

Guzmán’s bat reappeared in the sixth with an RBI hit to the left of Elier Hernández, who had received a ticket. Estevan Florial scored on the play, who entered to run for Jhailyn Ortiz after hitting a single, where an error by the blue defense led to the return.

The Scarlets added another in the seventh. Pedro Severino received a walk, advanced with Franmil Reyes’s hit ball and a base to Nick Franklin and scored with Elier Hernández’s fly ball.
