Reinaldo Pared Pérez commits suicide
The former secretary general of the Dominican Liberation Party, Reinaldo Pared Pérez, died this Thursday night in what appears to be a suicide, according to local newspaper El Día.
Pared Pérez was suffering from episodes of depression as a result of health problems caused by a cancer that was detected two years ago and for which he was undergoing treatment.
Roberto Rodríguez Marchena, who was a spokesman for the Government of Danilo Medina, confirmed the death on his Twitter account.
“What a great sadness! I just received the news of the death of my dear Reinaldo Pared Pérez. I will always remember him as he was: a decent, supportive, loyal and invariably worthy companion and friend. I transfer my solidarity and condolences to his mother, wife , children, grandchildren and brothers”, published Marchena.
The source says that the political leader took his life in a summer residence in Juan Dolio, where he spent most of his time after the illness.
The event occurred in the main room of the house in Juan Dolio, where Pared Pérez was with his wife. He was dressed in a long-sleeved shirt, sandals, and black jean pants.
Pared Pérez was president of the Senate for seven years and twice tried to obtain the presidential nomination for the Dominican Liberation Party.
The source also informed that he was found with a Glock pistol close to his left hand.
Pared Pérez was secretary general of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and a member of its Political Committee. He was also a Senator of the National District between 2006 and 2020. In addition, he was a lawyer and professor.
The politician had been battling cancer of the esophagus for several years, for which he was treated in the United States.
