Dominican Luis Severino on the Yankees disabled list
The starting right-hander had to leave the mound Wednesday against the Cincinnati with tightness in his throwing shoulder.
The Yankees announced they have placed starter Luis Severino on the 15-day disabled list due to a minor strain in his right back.
Right-hander Ryan Weber was selected to the major league club in his place. New York also reinstated reliever Jonathan Loaisiga from the 15-day disabled list, with JP Sears’ option to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last night to clear a roster spot.
New York already had an opening on the 40-man roster after designating Weber for assignment last week, a job he will now return to. Severino left last night’s start against the Reds with shoulder tightness.
He had dealt with a slightly decreased speed and was sent for an MRI this morning.
That revealed some degree of injury to his latissimus dorsi, though the Yankees’ specification that he is a low-grade strain appears to be a positive development.
New York hasn’t provided details on the timing of his return, but he will miss at least one or two starts after the All-Star Break. It’s the first time all season the Yankees have faced an injury to one of their top five starters.
Luis Severino had joined Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Jordan Montgomery and Jameson Taillon in staying healthy.
