Sabina Matos swears as Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island
Dominican Sabina Matos was sworn as Lieutenant Governor of the state of Rhode Island in Providence, thus becoming the first Latina and woman of color to achieve that position.
Matos was also the first Latina to lead the Providence City Council presidency. She is a native of ParaĆso, Barahona, and emigrated with her family to the United States in 1994.
She was nominated at the end of March by Governor Dan McKee, who assured that the Dominican was a prepared woman with the necessary experience to work closely with her administration.
“I am honored to have this opportunity, but at the same time, I know the responsibility that I have because when you are first, sometimes if you make a mistake, it will reflect on the rest of your community. I promise that I will work very hard to make them proud and that I will do my best. I will always do my best”, said Matos after the swearing-in ceremony.
Governor McKee wrote on his Twitter account that Matos has always been a woman passionate about her work and her community.
I am honored to welcome Lt. Governor @Sabina_Matos to our team. The Lt. Governor has always been a passionate advocate for the Rhode Islanders she represents. At the swearing-in ceremony of Matos, her husband, her two children and some members of the government were present.
After finishing the act, the Dominican spoke with the media and assured them that the priority of her management will be focused on housing and the existing crisis in that regard.
“One of the challenges we had in Providence is that you can find housing for the upper class, but if we want our teachers and our police to live in the city, we don’t have housing available for them”, Matos said, adding that everyone has a role to play in expanding housing affordability.
