The number of passengers that travelled through the Las Américas International Airport (AILA) in the month of December topped at 338,000, exceeding the number showed for the same period in 2019.
Accoridng to the Director of Communications of Airports Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), Luis José López, in December 2019 about 312,000 passengers used this airport located near Santo Domingo.
In 2020 most of the countries were under restrictive measures to prevent the spread of the pandemic, so the activity at airports was not significant.
“Based on the arrival of flights that we have had to date, we have exceeded the figure for 2019, which was Aerodom’s record year at AILA. Based on preliminary estimates that we have been seeing, 2019 has already been exceeded by this date”, he said.
López explained that the expectation is to close the month of December above 400,000 passengers.
“We had a peak two days ago. Always before Christmas Eve is when the largest number of travelers is registered, the same for a couple of days before the New Year, another peak is registered in the month, which are the exact days when there is greater traffic of people, “he said.
López added that Aerodom has been complying with the Government’s provision on the protocols to prevent COVID-19 infections.
“We must insist that only two people should come to receive the traveler, because here the custom is maintained that more people move to the airport, but the recommendation is that there are only two to avoid crowds,” he explained.
He also said that when taking the temperature at the entrance of the airport, people are required to have a vaccination card.
The Aerodom Communications Director said that to attend to the arrival of passengers, the capacity in the migration area has been expanded.
“The capacity has been expanded, in the arrival migration area additional modules were installed to accommodate additional passengers and also in coordination with the General Directorate of Migration it was possible to register the Dominican passport to make use of the service of autogate, “he said.
He said that these actions have helped that “despite the fact that there are a greater number of passengers, the processes have been carried out with agility and we have not had complaints from passengers for long lines or anything like that”.
“Unlike previous years in which there were recurring complaints due to high traffic, this year, thanks to the good coordination that has existed between all the entities that work at the airport, the flows and processes are agile”. he said. .
