Sandy Alcántara, winner of the National League Cy Young Award in 2022, registered his name on the squad that will represent the Dominican Republic in the 2023 World Baseball Classic with the request to launch the first game for the Dominicans.
During a press conference held in the seventh heaven of the Quisqueya Stadium, Alcántara had a participation via videoconference, taking the opportunity to make public his request to lead the Dominican pitchers for the great event.
In addition, he emphasized how pleasant a new championship in the World Cup would be for him and the entire Dominican people, as well as how privileged he feels to represent the national colors through sports.
Alcántara performed at superlative levels in the final Major League season after taking the lead in innings pitched (228.2), registering a microscopic ERA of 2.28, while retiring 207 batters via strikeout.
The Dominican team will face their Venezuelan counterparts in their first match during the classic, a commitment agreed to be held at the Loan Depot Park in Miami on March 11 of next year.
