Orthopedic robotic surgery now coming to the Dominican Republic
Dr. Jose Natalio Redondo, president of the Grupo Rescue, announced that orthopedic robotic surgery is coming to the Dominican Republic, for the benefit of the local population and the capture of international patients.
“All of us are preparing for the creation of an orthopedic robotic surgery program, called MAKOplasty, together with international companies, including doctors,” he said in an interview with the editor of dohealthwell.
The health expert broke the news after his participation in the panel “Medical Management. Cases of Success “, in the framework of MediTalk, which under the theme of” Healthcare Transformation”, held key actors of the medical sector, both nationally and internationally, who completed an agenda dedicated to discussing the most relevant topics about the challenges and opportunities facing the new era of this industry in the country, in a context of transformation.
In his first statements to the press in which he offered details about orthopedic robotic surgery in the Dominican Republic, he said that the Rescue Group has already contacted the technology provider and detailed the vision of the entity, who has a medical network of 6 hospitals, 4 urgent care clinics, and dozens of outpatient clinics.
“We already contacted the company that owns the robot, and the main objective is for Punta Cana to become a teaching center for Latin America, that is, for Latin American doctors who want to venture into the practice of joint robotic surgery, to come to train in a specialized center, small but very efficient “.
In this sense, orthopedic robotic surgery is part of the third stage of the Ciudad Sanitaria Grupo Rescue (Health City), which will build the Surgical Hospital and the International Teaching Center for Robotic Surgery, where reconstructive surgeries, orthopedic prostheses will be performed, and also column, and knee and hip replacement, in their 10 operating rooms and with a capacity of 40 rooms.
Grupo Rescue has stated previously that locals are the most benefited of this major health project.
They also believe in local medical talent and that this health city concept will serve as a support platform, knowledge transfer, and best practices.
During MediTalk, Dr. Redondo said that we live in a globalized world that favors the exchange of experiences with international colleagues, in order to strengthen Dominican medicine and position the Caribbean country as a safe health tourism destination.
When will orthopedic robotic surgery in the Dominican Republic become a reality?
With respect to the definitive start-up of this technological innovation that, he said, has the support of international institutions, Dr. José Natalio Redondo, first stressed that the success of the project lies inaccessibility.
“The success we can have in the next few years in the Dominican Republic in the health sector will be closely linked to the development of new technologies, but which are accessible, and which are accessible to the international and local market. If that duality does not exist, it will be a probable failure,” said the tourist medicine pioneer.
According to the health tourism entrepreneur, “after two or three years we can achieve the goal” of offering the orthopedic robotic service.
What is Makoplasty
Robotic partial knee replacement (MAKOplasty) is a surgical treatment designed to relieve knee pain caused by the wear and tear of the articular cartilage.
This procedure of partial knee replacement is performed with a robotic arm, which allows the surgeon to treat only the damaged part of the knee so that healthy bones and ligaments that surround the damaged area are safe from trauma.
MAKOplasty is best suited for adults who suffer knee pain from osteoarthritis in one of the three compartments of the knee but is not eligible for a total knee replacement.
What is the Ciudad Sanitaria Grupo Rescue
This mega health care project in Bavaro-Punta Cana for the local population and medical travelers, in addition to orthopedic robotic surgery, will include continuing medical education and a hotel for the patient recovery and family members.
By the end of 2019, the second stage of the Ciudad Sanitaria Grupo Rescue will be inaugurated, consisting of the construction of the Ambulatory Tower, a five-story building that will have imaging and laboratory areas, 42 medical specialty offices and 100 Beds.
By 2022, it is expected to complete its fourth stage, which has a hospital specialized in health tourism, and:
- Hotel for recovery/family for post-operative care and early rehabilitation
- Spa
- Wellness Center
- Restaurants with special menus
- General services
