Inter-American Bank approves financing for the Manzanillo port
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) unanimously approved financing for the development strategy of Bahía de Manzanillo, the construction of which will generate thousands of jobs for the northwestern part of the country.
The project promotes the economic and social development of the area, which will be reflected in significant savings for the productive area of the northern region, especially in maritime transport due to its proximity to the East coast of the United States and land transport for producers of the northern part of the Dominican Republic.
Lisandro Macarrulla, Minister of the Presidency, stated that “this approval represents an important step for the completion of the project, which will include the complete repair of the Manzanillo port, along with other works that will later be carried out as part of the complex.”
The project will include the construction and rehabilitation of the access roads to the port, including the Navarrete-Monte Cristi highway, which has already started, as well as the fitting out of other secondary roads under the Ministry of Public Works.
Regarding the other initiatives around the port, Macarrulla said that they will be carried out with private investment, but “they depend on the construction of the port, which will be done with investment from the State through IDB financing.”
Development of the northwest zone
The approval of the financing of the works would make it possible to start work on the master plan for the development of Manzanillo, which will generate thousands of formal jobs.
The project is expected to become the starting point for the development of the northwest zone and the province of Montecristi. The initiative has been considered of high national interest by President Luis Abinader and is under the coordination of the Ministry of the Presidency.
