US military engineers provide assistance to reestablish the Manzanillo port
Engineers from the United States Navy will supervise the reestablishment process of the Manzanillo dock, in Monte Cristi, which closes the possibilities of a negotiation with Chinese investors.
The United States had made known to the Dominican Republic of its concern that China could have control of that port facility, located just 650 miles from Florida.
The participation of the US military in the project was revealed during a meeting of the US Army Corps of Engineers with President Luis Abinader on Sept. 1st.
A note distributed by the Information and Press Office of the Presidency indicates that President Abinader held a working meeting with the “United States Army Corps of Engineers”.
He attributes to him having thanked “the help, advice, and contributions in the implementation of this ambitious goal, so important for the country of the future that builds its management”.
Abinader considered this Tuesday that the rehabilitation and expansion project of the Port of Manzanillo is vital to position the Dominican Republic at the highest levels of competitiveness at the scale of the entire region.
It is, he stressed, a macro project that has a significant investment for its execution by the Inter-American Development Bank. He said that it will generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs in the region.
