Foreign Minister: there’s no dialogue until Haiti stops canal construction
The Dominican Republic Foreign Minister, Roberto Álvarez, reiterated that until there is a dialogue with Haiti again, no decisions will be made regarding the construction of the canal to divert the Dajabon River.
“We have come here to better understand the problem, I insist right here in Dajabón and reiterated that the dialogue will not continue until the neighbors stop the construction of the work”, said Álvarez.
The official referred to the issue while holding a meeting with landowners from the areas that will possibly be affected by the connection, from the La Vigía community to El Coco and Sánchez in the Dajabón municipality.
The landowners complained that they had not put enough pressure on Haiti to stop the construction of the canal, which will not work if a dam is not built, which will also be impossible for them.
Ramón Cordero said that this project must be aborted immediately and the foreign minister has shown solidarity in the case.
While Cesar Brito, president of the association of landowners in the El Coco y Sánchez sector, trusted that the authorities will seek a quick solution to the problem before this can lead to acts of violence or other types of protests.
The chancellor, together with other authorities and the parceleros, made a descent to the next place where Haitians are building the canal, with the purpose of connecting to the Dajabon River in the border area.
