Dominicans celebrate their parade in New York
The Dominican community in New York will celebrate its traditional parade on August 14th, which this year reaches its 40th anniversary.
Dominicans, who have made important advances in politics, where they already have a representative in the United States Congress, and who have an important presence in businesses such as supermarkets, restaurants, grocery stores or taxi companies, will once again take Sixth Avenue New York to celebrate their culture and presence in this country.
On August 14th, Sixth Avenue will be filled with the folk rhythms of the country; of merengue and bachata, of the floats and carnival characters such as “diablos cojuelos” or “roba gallina” as well as hundreds of flags in a parade that will focus on highlighting education among Dominicans and the work of its professionals.
Like every year, the community will pay tribute to compatriots who have stood out in various areas and among them are the “marshal of the parade”, a position that this year fell to the transportation commissioner of this city, Ydanis Rodríguez, while the ambassador of Equity and Inclusion will play Wendy Garcia, the highest-ranking Dominican-American in the New York Police Department.
Among those who will be recognized by their community are also the comedian Ruperto Vanderpool as the “Cacique de la Alegría” and the famous Quisqueya Group with the award for their 50 years of promoting merengue.
The Spaniard Jomari Goyso, known for his participation in the Univisión television program “Despierta América”, will be the guest of honor of the parade, which will also feature the prominent Dominican singer Rubby Pérez.
“This year’s diverse group of honorees demonstrates the impact and legacy that Dominicans are leaving in every area of the American society,” Cristina Contreras, president of the parade’s board of directors, said in a statement.
