Abel Martínez wins the PLD presidential candidate runoff
Abel Martínez is the presidential candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), after obtaining a solid victory with 60.87% of the votes, equivalent to more votes than all the other candidates together, in what was the citizen consultation organized to measure the sympathy of the candidates.
With 75.48% of the votes computed in six bulletins, Martínez obtained a total of 213,185 votes; followed at a distance by Francisco Domínguez Brito, with 73,137 (20.82%), Margarita Cedeño, 57,024 (16.23%), Maritza Hernández, 3,737 (1.06%); Karen Ricardo 2,672 (0.76%); and Luis de León, 1,520 (0.44%).
With 23 years of militancy in the PLD, a period in which he has been president of the Chamber of Deputies and mayor of Santiago de los Caballeros -his current position- Martínez will guide the purple party in the search for power that they lost in 2020, after have it for 16 years.
In his first speech as a presidential candidate for the purple party, Martínez thanked God for giving him strength, the party president, Danilo Medina; the general secretary, Charlie Mariotti; to the electoral commission; his wife, the television presenter, Nahiony Reyes; and to all the sympathizers for the organized consultative process yesterday, Sunday.
During the message, issued at the National House on Independencia Avenue, in the National District, where former president Medina and most of the members of the PLD leadership were also present, Martínez congratulated his party rivals for the unity they showed in the contest. He told all the people who want to be part of that party that their doors are open within the organization founded by Juan Bosch.
The promotion of policies in favor of youth, women and vulnerable sectors, added to a strong policy against illegal immigration are part of the proposals that Martínez has expressed that he would put into action in his government.
