Two detainees and twenty questioned for alleged sabotage at airport
At least two people are detained under investigation, and about twenty have been questioned in relation to the incident that occurred on the runway of the Las Américas International Airport (AILA), which caused a blackout in the lighting system.
However, the military commission in charge of the investigation process into the case has not revealed the identities of the detainees.
The investigations are carried out by officials of the National Investigations Department (DNI) of the Specialized Corps of Airport Security and Civil Aviation and other agencies.
In addition, officials from the Central Directorate of Criminal Investigations (Dicrim) and representatives of the Public Ministry and J-2 of the Ministry of Defense also participate.
In relation to the incident, civilian and military employees who were working near the place where the incident took place that Sunday, May 23rd, have already been questioned.
According to the details of the case, the cables that power the airport’s runway lighting system were cut, causing a blackout in the lights that power the airport’s runways and disruption of flight operations.
At least 15 flights, some of which were flying over the airport area, and others within a short distance to land, were affected.
The mishap also created inconvenience for passengers, because some of the planes were diverted to nearby airports where they landed.
In the course of last week, the investigators carried out a survey in the place where the records of the cable system are located, in search of evidence and other elements that could help to clarify what really happened.
The investigations are in their final phase, but the authorities indicated that we must first deepen the investigations, to try to tie up with absolute transparency what happened.
