Santo Domingo suspends flights to Orlando amid tropical storm Nicole

Several round trip flights have been canceled from the Las Américas International Airport (AILA) to Orlando, Florida, United States, due to the passage of Tropical Storm Nicole, causing dozens of passengers to be stranded.

Spirit Airlines canceled its flight leaving and returning to Santo Domingo from Orlando, because of the weather from the storm.

Spirit Airlines, prior to the cancellation of its flight, communicated the measure to its users via social networks and by telephone.

An appreciable number of travelers affected by the cancellation lined up this Wednesday in front of the airline counters, on the second level of the terminal, postponing their departure for another date.

Likewise, it was reported that the North American authorities in Orlando, Florida, would extend the closure of the airport and the suspension of all operations until Friday, due to the passage of storm Nicole.

The airline explained that once the weather conditions return to normal in the state of Florida, operations from the Las Américas terminal will resume immediately.

Tropical Storm Nicole, whose winds are already reaching 70 miles per hour (110 km/h) and are still expected to rise higher, approached the Great Abaco Island of the Bahamas on Wednesday on its way to the east coast of Florida, where it will make landfall as a hurricane.

Nicole is a tropical storm, whose winds extend outward up to 460 miles (740 km), especially north of its center, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center warned.

Nicole will then cross central and northern Florida to southern Georgia on Thursday and continue through the Carolinas on Friday.
