Pierlusi requests the reduction of airfares to the Dominican Republic
The Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierlusi, held a meeting with the Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, David Collado, and spoke about the need to reduce the cost of airplane tickets between the two countries.
“Among the many topics discussed, the Governor asked me to communicate to President Luis Abinader the need to reach agreements to reduce the cost of air tickets, in order to increase the tourist flow between both countries”, he reported.
According to the Fare Compare portal, the average price of a single trip from Santo Domingo to San Juan, Puerto Rico is $295 dollars, while the average round trip ticket is US$506.
Collado, who traveled to Puerto Rico to complete a work agenda that includes visits to tour operators, emphasized that the island is a market that represents the visit of more than 127 thousand tourists a year.
Dominican tourism in January
According to official date, the Dominican Republic closed January with the visit of 530,956 non-residents (129% more than the previous year), of which 82% were of foreign origin).
Despite the cancellation of flights from the United States to the Caribbean country because of the snow storms that affected the east coast of the American giant, in January 2022 the arrival of non-residents remained above half a million tourists, as in the best months of 2021, exposed the agency.
Likewise, the emergence of the omicron variant and the consequent tightening of the measures affected the arrival of Canadians to the country, but it was not enough for non-residents from the rest of the world (excluding the United States and Canada) to register a historical maximum of 245,301.
The projection for the end of this year is to exceed the arrival of 7 million visitors.
