Doina de Campos: health travel is a great opportunity for Santo Domingo
For Doina de Campos, health tourism brings great opportunities to the city of Santo Domingo, being the entrance door of the Americas and as part of the “crossing of all ways” concept.
“From the beginning, one of my concerns was to integrate Health and Wellness Tourism. We have exceptional facilities and the best hospitals of the Caribbean are here,” said De Campos on an interview on October 1st, opening day of the Santo Domingo Destino Capital 2018.
The event has the support of the Dominican Health Tourism Association (ADTS) and the Health Tourism Department at the Ministry of Tourism.
On her visit to their joint stand, De Campos highlighted the Dominican Republic Health and Wellness Destination Guide as an information reference to find cost-effective and quality treatment in Santo Domingo.
In that sense, the tourism expert is interested in targeting medical travelers coming from the Antilles, given the proximity to the country.
“Guadalupe and Martinique have a huge health problem. We have the possibility of bringing patients that are really in need of treatment or surgery without flying to France. For any problems, instead of taking a plane for eight hours, they can come to Santo Domingo in an hour or an hour and a half.”
These french colonies represent a great opportunity for Santo Domingo. Currently, official data indicates that the Dominican Republic is receiving hundreds of patients from Saint Martin, Turks & Caicos, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Doina de Campos about Santo Domingo Destino Capital 2018
“Destino Capital is an event that aims to remind the world that Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic, the first capital of America, and the entrance door because of its geographic location. This enables us to develop the concept of the ‘crossing of all ways’ based in Santo Domingo.
De Campos wants to carry out a global promotion of the destination, where all the routes arrive and depart as in the 16th century, focusing on the possibilities of multiple trips with connection to Santo Domingo.
“For many reasons, in several countries we benefit from a borrowed tourism that we must convert into permanent tourism, multiplying the travel options to Santo Domingo and from the capital to other destinations,” added the tourism specialist Doina de Campos.
The 6th edition of Santo Domingo Destino Capital gathered more than 40 tourism companies from the Dominican Republic and neighboring countries exhibited their products and services to what is considered as the favorite gate of tourist, and moreover the cultural, gastronomic, financial, shopping, fashion, health, air and maritime entrance to the Americas.
The Antilles
Information from Wikipedia: The Antillean islands are divided into the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles.
The Greater Antilles includes Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), and the Cayman Islands.
The Lesser Antilles contains the northerly Leeward Islands, the southeasterly Windward Islands, and the Leeward Antilles just north of Venezuela. Also, the Lucayan Archipelago (consisting of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands).
