Dominican Republic levels up exports at a global scale
In the midst of the pandemic, the Dominican Republic has continued to export its products to Switzerland, the United States, Haiti, Canada, India, Puerto Rico, China, the Netherlands, Jamaica, South Korea, and other parts of the world.
Between January and December 2020, national exports were led by the type of metal good, made up of gold, silver, and others.
Moreover and according to the data published by the General Customs Directorate (DGA), the Dominican Republic exports through the free zones regime: machines and appliances, electrical material and their parts; optical, photographic, or cinematographic instruments and apparatus; manufactured tobacco and tobacco substitutes; pharmaceutical products; garments and accessories, clothing, knitted shoes, leggings, and similar articles; parts of these articles, among others.
The exports of the national regime include foundry, iron, and steel; cocoa and its preparations (free and national zones); edible fruits and nuts; sugars and confectionery; salt, sulfur, earth, and stones, among others.
Exports of the aforementioned products from the free zone and national regimes are led by shipments of machines and electrical material that last year reached 1,134.14 million, for a positive absolute variation of 113.12 million, when compared to the year 2019, where these exports were located at 1,021.02 million.
Also, there are the optical, photography, or cinematographic instruments and devices that reached 1,077.68 million dollars exhibiting a positive absolute variation of 83.95 million dollars. During 2019 this tariff chapter reached 993.73 million.
Another tariff chapter that stood out in 2020 compared to 2019 was tobacco and manufactured tobacco substitutes. Statistics provided by Customs indicate that tobacco exports reached 927.77 million dollars between January and December 2020, for about 3.79 million more than during 2019, when the numbers were placed at 923.97 million dollars.
The other products that stand out in the list of national exports and the free zone regime reached numbers between 445.31 and 52.03 million dollars.
Within the list of products is cocoa. Between October 2019 and September 2020 the country had a total production of 65,540.57 metric tons In that same period, there was an export of 70,067.23 metric tons. Cocoa exports generated US $ 201,961,663.65.
According to data from Conacado, in the Dominican Republic, there are 42,751 producers dedicated to the cultivation of cocoa and the area devoted to cocoa is 2,750,000 tasks.
Customs reported through the Trade Magazine that the exports of the national regime, for the period of January – December 2020, amounted to 3,671.54 million dollars, presenting a fall of 1.15% compared to January – December 2019, a period that is exported 3,714.42 million. It stands out that 61.13% of the exports of the national regime belong to metal goods, while the remaining 38.87% are non-metal goods.
In the case of exports from the free zone regime for the period January – December 2020, these amounted to 5,827.72 million, presenting a drop of 2.89% in relation to the same period of 2019, when they were located at 6,001.18 million dollars.
The General Customs Directorate indicates that 50.80% of these exports correspond to consumer goods, 35.75% to capital goods, and the remaining 13.44% to raw materials.
